Where brand building meets digital transformation

Brand building, for me, is a story. It is the work of finding what is true about a business, then bringing it to life through words, through visuals, through promises. But it is also, by definition, intangible.

Digital transformation is where that story is put to work and tested. It is where most people first meet a brand, a product or a service. This is the narrative that makes the story come alive, orchestrating every moment and interaction until the brand becomes something people can believe in, accept and want.

What brands and digital products need

The two halves need each other. A brand without a catalyst is a forgotten presentation, or a PDF nobody knows how to act on. A digital product without a strategy has nothing to say. The true business and customer value is where the two meet, and that is where I work, connecting a brand to the people it is for. It is also where growth comes from. People only move from observer to advocate once they have met and experienced the brand or the offering.

Why the two rarely come together

Yet the two halves are rarely built or bought in tandem. The industry has moved toward deep, siloed expertise. The red thread that connects it all gets lost in the gaps between clients, agencies and partners, because none of them holds the whole picture. A thousand puzzle pieces are not a picture. Someone has to know what the picture is, why it matters, and where each piece goes.

How I use storytelling to join the two

I learned to hold and weave that thread by practising all the disciplines. I have done the design, the branding, the strategy and the digital products myself. Since 2007 I have navigated back and forth between brand and digital, building products where the focus was brand and doing brand work where the focus was digital. Each time, it meant crossing a discipline rather than settling into one.

Holding that thread rarely happens in a single project or overnight. It takes partnerships built over time. I have worked with clients like Metso, Serlachius and Puro.earth on multi-year projects and repeat assignments. I have also continued building the Tirol brand together with its Tourism Board.

The tools for weaving story and narrative are strategic thinking and creative direction. Used well, they show people that a business understands them. That is what this work brings into a company. Empathy and purpose.

I am based in the Helsinki region. Previously at Wunderman Thompson and Werklig, I now bring empathy and purpose to digital products as Strategy Lead at Evermade.
